Elements of out-of-body experience
Common elements of Out-of-Body Experience or Astral Projection — occurring while the individual is conscious of the experience and not dreaming — include:
- Temporary inability to move the physical body. Not all muscles are paralyzed, however. The diaphragm is still working so the person can breathe.
- Body vibrations, tremors, sometimes starting with the lower body and extending upwards.
- Perception of winds blowing or puffs of air covering the body.
- Feeling like you rise out, slide out or someone is pulling you out of your body, this could be feet first or head first or straight up. Some say they sink through the bed.
- Traveling through a tunnel or vortex at high speed.
- Floating or flying without technical means of flight.
- Sticking to or bumping the ceiling, or being pulled close to the ground.
- Feeling of great effort needed to move through a thick substance, deep water or strong gravity.
- Being fully alert while external to the body, knowing you are not asleep or hallucinating.
- Seeing with physical eyes closed, with everything in muted shades, tint, moonlight or 'haze' especially in blue, green or grey. Also described as "night-vision goggles".
- Seeing the physical body resting on the bed.
- Seeing the property of previous occupants; seeing furniture or objects still present which had been removed; or observing activities in adjacent rooms or elsewhere in the building.
- Hearing the sound current especially loud. This can be a tone, buzz, static, screech or scream, a ripping sound, mechanical or electronic sounds; seemingly natural sounds like thunder or bees, individual string or bell instruments or continuous nonrepeating melodies.
- Hearing a loud snap, explosive, crack or crashing sound with no external source.
- Hearing multiple conversations at once - described as "talk shows", "radio voices" or "group discussions".
- Going through solid objects like windows or walls while feeling their construction materials.
- Seeing the astral body as translucent or outline.
- Seeing insect-like forms crawling on wall or ceiling.
- Seeing a cord or tentacle connecting the astral body with the physical body, apparently emerging from the lower dantien in the abdomen.
- Seeing a vast starry sky.
- Seeing streets, homes etc. from a high vantage point.
- An overwhelming sensation often called "More Real Than Real", recognizing the OBE/AP as much more vivid than dull everyday experiences or dreams.
- Falling back into the physical body as if dropped from a great height.
